Condors Warm Families Coat Drive brings in more than 1,350 coats

On Monday night, the Condors held the 11th Annual Project Warm Families Coat Collection, sponsored by KGET-TV 17, The Fox 98.5 and Direct Buy, which resulted in the donation of more than 1,350 coats. coat driveWith the coats collected this year, the grand total grew to more than 20,600 coats. Volunteers from Junior Achievement helped collect the coats, which will be distributed to organizations such as Teen Challenge and CHW Mercy Learning Center for families and individuals in need that otherwise would go without warm attire during the winter months. "With the economy in a downturn, this is such an important event for families struggling to make ends meet," said KGET News Promotions Director Michelle Willow. "It never fails to amaze me, that KGET viewers and Condors fans come out to help an important cause. I am truly appreciative of all of them. We have the greatest fans!"

The Bakersfield Condors held their Olympic-themed Jersey Off Our Backs Raffle and Auction Saturday night, sponsored by Bright House Networks, KUZZ 107.9 and McDonald's. The Jersey auction raised a total of $23,325 for Ronald McDonald Charities, lifting the 11-year Condors jersey auction grand total to more than $582,000.

Lezak jerseyThe money raised from Saturday night's auction will help fund the building of the Ronald McDonald Family Room in Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. The Family Room will serve as a place for parents and families of sick children to stay while their children receive treatment. The Ronald McDonald Room will be complete with beds, a bathroom with a shower, an office with a computer and internet, and a kitchen, so that up to three families can stay close to their loved ones while at the hospital.

"As Chairman of Ronald McDonald Family Room committee, we're proud to be part of this wonderful fundraiser," said Jim Darling. "It never ceases to amaze me, the generosity of Condors fans. From all of us, we give a heartfelt thank you."

The Olympic-style jerseys, commemorating the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, are red, white and blue with stars down the left sleeve and the Olympic torch on the right sleeve. The jersey also features an Olympic variation of the Condors logo. The Condor has a gold medal hanging from its neck with an American swim cap atop its head, in honor of the Condors special guest that night, three-time Olympic swimmer and California native Jason Lezak. An Olympic-themed Lezak jersey was auctioned off after the game and brought in a whopping $2,100, which was second only to D Scott Balan's #7 jersey, which was auctioned off for $2,500.
